Youth Community Cricket Programme Begins
Monday, 20th July, 2009: As the West Indies took on Bangladesh at the Grenada National Stadium, approximately two hundred youngsters registered to participate in the Youth Community Cricket Programmme, which got underway on Monday, 20 July. The programme, sponsored by the Grenada Electricity Services Ltd (GRENLEC), will provide a positive outlet for some youngsters in the communities of Munic, Union, Fort Royal, DeBlandeau, Richmond, La Digue, St. James, Birchgrove, Sabb, Mirabeau and Bilands. It will also enhance the youngsters’ cricketing skills and seek to generate added interest in the sport.
Underscoring GRENLEC’s longstanding involvement in community development, Corporate Communications Manager, Ms. Prudence Greenidge said, “We are delighted about our company’s ability to invest in the holistic development of our nation’s youth. We take seriously, our responsibility to invest in the future by ensuring that we help to mould our boys and girls. Sport instills discipline, engages young people in healthy activity and provides avenues for active development of conflict resolution skills”. According to Coordinator, Mr. Anthony Dixon, the programme is designed to improve the youngsters’ practical and theoretical knowledge of the game, basic technique, team building skills and mental skills. Consequently, participants will attend lectures as well as practical sessions. Dixon noted that organisers hope to “provide an enjoyable experience, through which participants will broaden their interest in and knowledge of the game of cricket, demonstrate basic skills, understand the importance of teamwork, improve their mental approach to sport and appreciate the significance of cricket to our region.
The Youth Community Cricket Programme, which began in the parish of St. Andrew, has been extended this year to include some areas of St. Patrick and St. George. Mr. Anthony Dixon, along with John Olive, Shaun Walcott, Laurie Williams and Rawl Lewis are serving as instructors for the two-week programme.
