The GRENLEC Inter-Secondary School Debating Competition is a national championship open to all secondary schools in the state of Grenada. It is the biggest debating event in the tri-island nation consisting of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique and evolved from an initiative developed by the Media Workers Association of Grenada (MWAG) in 1996 and 1997 and sponsored by GRENLEC. In 2008, the Grenada Electricity Services Ltd. (GRENLEC) took ownership of the project, as the focus of its educational thrust. The company manages and sponsors the initiative as an annual activity.
MWAG continues to provide valuable support in the planning and execution of the project, which has the full endorsement of the Ministry of Education and the support of the Association of Secondary School Principals. Civil society and the private sector are also actively involved, through representation on the Resolutions Committee and the Judging Panel.

GRENLEC Inter-Secondary School Debating Competition (GISSDC)…powering bright ideas As part of its strategic initiative the company through its Corporate Communications Department embraced the challenge to sponsor and coordinate the largest Inter-Secondary School Debating Competition in Grenada (GISSDC).
The initiative is part of the company’s commitment to invest in the development of the youths of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique by engaging them in healthy debate. Having sought the permission of the Ministry of Education and support of the Principals’ Association, the company sought to invite all twenty-one secondary schools across Grenada and Carriacou to participate in the 2008 competition. The overwhelming favorable responses provided the fuel for the engine that would power bright ideas. Over one hundred and fifty students and thirty coaches were exposed to training in critical areas such as research, organization and oral communication skills.
To assist the Company with the coordination of the program, a project coordinator was contracted to act as a medium between the schools and the company. Other subcommittees were formed to ensure all aspects of the project ran smoothly and fairly, with former Governor General Sir Paul School giving leadership to the Motions and grievance Committee.
The competition, which begun with an opening ceremony at the Grenada Trade Centre, Grand Anse on Wednesday October 01st, 2008 saw an exciting debate between Bishop’s College and Presentation Brother’s College which would set the stage for the eight-week long competition.
Throughout the competition the company ensured that students were able to attend their debates by providing funding to cover transportation costs as participants visited and engaged in debates at several different host schools cross the island. What the Debating competition has done goes far beyond the initially perceived scope of the initiative which is to raise an army of great thinkers, writers and speakers. No boundary can be drawn for the many positive spin offs that accompanied this process.
The company views this competition as an integral part of developing the intellectual capital of Grenada and it is its vision to make this outreach program the leading intellectual development program among youths and has pledged to make this competition our Flagship Annual Event, touching the lives of students and others throughout the entire nation.
This year’s competition culminated with a closing ceremony and final debate on Friday November 30th 2008 at the Grenada Trade Centre. The exciting war of words was staged between Westmorland Secondary and St. Rose Modern Secondary. Both teams displayed exemplary debating skills but in the end Westmorland Secondary was declared the winner.
The company looks forward to hosting another exciting year of Inter Secondary School Debating Competition and powering bright ideas! |
