With this project, GRENLEC seized another opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our disadvantaged youthful population.  After completion of refurbishment of the building to house the facility, the Emergency Shelter for Girls was handed over on August 7, 2009.

“The protection and empowerment of our young people is an area of emphasis for GRENLEC because we have identified a significant responsibility to care for youth. Over the years, we have sought to make a difference in our communities by supporting projects such as the construction of the Bel Air Home. We have already approved funding for an initiative to expand the Queen Elizabeth Home for children, in Tempe. These facilities, like this shelter, are critical aspects of the infrastructure to care for our country's most precious resource, our people”. With these words, GRENLEC’s Chief Engineer, Mr. Clive Hosten presented the Key for the Emergency Shelter for Girls, to the Chairperson of the Child Welfare Authority, Ms. Leslie-Ann Seon.

In his remarks, Minister for Social Development, Mr. Sylvester Quarless praised GRENLEC’s partnership with government and NGOs to safeguard vulnerable populations. Following the handing over of the key, Lady Norma Glean cut the ribbon and declared the Shelter officially opened.

GRENLEC funded the refurbishment project, to the tune of $300,000, as part of its commitment to invest in community development.
