The hurricane season officially began on June 01st and will run until November 30th 2009. As much as we are hoping for an uneventful season; we must put plans in place in the event that a hurricane or other natural disaster should occur.

This is a good time to ensure that disaster plans are in place for your family, home and business. Take the time, if you have not already done so, to prepare your plans as needed.
Here are a few tips to help you get started:
- Gather the following items to include in your disaster kit: batteries, portable radio, flashlights, matches, clothing, water, non-perishable food items, sanitation supplies and a first aid kit
- Place valuables and important papers in waterproof containers or plastic bags
- Ensure that you have adequate baby supplies and other medicines
- Safely remove or relocate all electrical equipment and appliances from locations where they can get wet
- Review family evacuation plans and know where your emergency shelter is located
(A list of Emergency shelters will be provided shortly)
Proper planning helps us to remain calm when disasters strike. When a watch or warning is issued you should:
- Monitor your TV and/or radio for emergency announcements. It is extremely important to monitor television and radio broadcasts for the storm's position, intensity and expected landfall.
- Make preparations to secure your windows and doors
- Know where your electrical panel is in the event that you need to turn off the power
- Secure your home and pets
Above all, do not wait until disaster strikes to begin preparations. Remember proper planning can help to protect us.
